What's a Cable Modem?
Cable Modem service is a new application of technology that
in effect converts our coaxial cable into a high-speed,
two-way data pipeline.
How Does a Cable Modem Work?
The concept is really simple. A portion of the high-capacity
coaxial cable is reserved for data communication - kind of
like a videotape which has certain channels reserved for audio.
The cable modem box, which connects between the coaxial cable
and your computer, converts the appropriate signals to the
Ethernet card-equipped computer. The result is convenient,
super-quick, 24-hour Internet access.
How Fast is the Cable Modem?
A number of factors determine the speed of the data as it
goes from web servers to your computer. Dataframe can now
deliver downstream speeds far greater than dial-up telephone
modems, ISDN, using a 10baseT Ethernet interface. Data bandwidth
is shared from the neighborhood node to users in individual
homes, so performance may vary depending on how many customers
are using at one time. Additionally, the web page source or
Internet circuit with the slowest throughput along the data
path determines the effective download speed.
Even though many factors help determine effective speed of
our service, Dataframe has been engineered to provide a consistent
and reliable throughput speed that exceeds ISDN at 128K. Here's
an example, even with a 28.8 Kpbs modem at non-peak hours
it takes 45 minutes to download a 10 Mb file, which is about
the size of a one minute video clip. However with a cable
modem it would only take a fraction of the time! (Actual speeds
may vary.)
It's Coax to the Max!
With Dataframe service, you're always connected to the Internet,
so there's no need to dial up and log on just to check your
e-mail. No more tying up your phone lines or busy signals
to call your Internet Service Provider. You'll enjoy unlimited
Internet access at a flat, affordable monthly rate. Plus,
if you order Dataframe Cable Modem service, your household
can watch cable TV, talk on the phone or send a fax and surf
the net all at the same time.
